The A+ 2003 certification is CompTIA's leading entry-level, vendor-neutral exam for computer-service technicians. It is widely used as a starting point for various system administration and network administration certification. For example, A+ coupled with either CompTIA Network+ certification or Server+ certification, can be used as an elective for Microsoft's MCSA certification.

CompTIA has updated the A+ certification program in September 2006 and introduced new exams that focus on the hardware and software knowledge, with added elements of security and soft skills, as well as safety and environmental issues.
